Cabarete Beach Condos: Five Checks to Run Against Los Corales, Bávaro
Search for Cabarete beach condos and you land in a north-coast kite town. Secret Garden is not there: it is a community of 327 residences in Los Corales, Bávaro, on the eastern edge of the island in La Altagracia province. This page names no building in Cabarete and ranks nothing. What it can do, from here, is set out the checks a buyer drawn to a walk-to-the-beach town tends to run — the stroll to the sand, what the water is good for, the travel day, whose calendar fills the weeks, and what exactly is being bought — and answer each one plainly for both places, because Los Corales is itself a beach neighbourhood people get around on foot rather than by car.
Two beach towns on two different coasts
Cabarete sits on the Atlantic-facing north shore, in Puerto Plata province, wrapped around its bay. Its nearest airport is Gregorio Luperón International at Puerto Plata (POP), about 11 miles away according to the town's Wikipedia entry. Los Corales lies on the opposite side of the country, a district of Bávaro where Secret Garden is being built on roughly 12.4 acres, with Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) a 15-minute drive at 12.2 miles.
The whole island lies between the two, so this is not a choice between neighbouring streets. It is a choice between two versions of one idea — a home you leave on foot for the beach — and the useful question is which version suits the way you would really use it.
Check one: can you walk from your door to the sand?
For most people this is why Cabarete made the shortlist. The town follows the curve of its bay, the beach is where its streets end, and a condo there is bought so that a morning on the water and an evening meal are both a stroll away.
Los Corales passes the same test in its own way. The beach is about 1,476 ft from the Secret Garden gate, a 5-minute walk, and the neighbourhood reaches the water through open pedestrian lanes that run from the street straight down to the sand, with bakeries, cafés and beach bars along the way. Neither place asks you to drive for the daily loop. Where they part company is what is waiting at the end of the walk.

Check two: what is the water good for?
In Cabarete the answer is wind. The bay has hosted professional kitesurfing competitions, and a short way west of town Kite Beach is given over to kiting while Playa Encuentro is a surf beach with its own reef break. Riders arrive for a breeze that builds as the day goes on; a still, glassy swim is not what the bay is famous for.
The Los Corales shoreline is shaped by a different feature. A coral reef lying well offshore along the Bávaro coast breaks up the bigger waves before they reach the beach, so the shallows inside it are usually calm, with a gentle sandy slope into the water. Local beach guides describe it as a spot for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding, young children included. Back inside the gates, the community's own water is a 19,375 sq ft lagoon pool. If you want to ride, the north coast is made for it. If you want to float, this shore is.
Check three: how long is the travel day?
A second home is only as useful as the journey to reach it, and this is where the two coasts differ most in scale. Banco Central figures compiled on Wikipedia count 10,689,693 passengers through Punta Cana International in 2025, against 814,076 through the Puerto Plata airport. On a September 2026 reading of the route aggregator FlightConnections, PUJ had non-stop service to 94 destinations in 30 countries on 41 airlines.
Bigger is not automatically better: the Puerto Plata terminal is close to Cabarete, and a quieter airport can be quicker to get through. What volume does change is choice — how many cities have a direct flight, how many airlines compete on your route, and how easily a guest from somewhere unexpected can reach you. From Secret Garden, the last leg is a 15-minute drive.
| The check | Cabarete (north coast) | Los Corales, Bávaro (east coast) |

Check four: whose calendar fills the weeks?
Beach towns fill up for different reasons. Cabarete's kite schools report wind for much of the year, strongest in summer when afternoon thermals stack on top of the trade winds, with winter fronts bringing heavier northerly air — so many of its visitors are riders timing a trip to the conditions. The Bávaro coast draws a broader crowd of holidaymakers, families and golfers, a good share of them escaping a northern winter.
That matters to an owner who plans to let the home, because it decides who is searching for your dates. It does not tell you what a residence will earn, and this page claims no occupancy or nightly rate for either town. One national point travels with you to both coasts: short-term letting is allowed by law, but the building's own condominium bylaws are what actually bind, so read them before you count on renting by the night.
Check five: what exactly are you buying?
On the north coast you would be choosing among whatever stands in the town today, and this site cannot speak to that stock. At Secret Garden the purchase is a home still being built: 327 residences, from $233,000, with delivery scheduled for mid-2027, inside a gated community planned around the lagoon pool, a gym, a spa, a coworking space and an on-site restaurant.
Buying new from the developer also brings a legal difference worth knowing. The Dominican tourism-incentive law, Law 158-01, known as CONFOTUR, grants its exemptions from the 3% transfer tax and from the annual property tax to first buyers from the developer in an approved project. Resales are excluded, and the exemption has to be filed and recorded on the title rather than arriving on its own. How it applies to a particular unit is a question for your Dominican attorney.
So which beach town is yours?
If the pull of Cabarete is the board — wind in the afternoon, a reef break down the road — buy on the north coast. Nothing in Bávaro replaces that, and we will not pretend it does. If the pull is simpler, a home where you walk to calm water in the morning and to dinner in the evening, a short hop from a large international airport, Los Corales offers that on the east coast, and Secret Garden is one address in it.
Whichever way you lean, spend a few days in the town during the season you would really use it, walk the route from the front door to the water yourself, and have a Dominican attorney review the file before you sign.
Common questions
- Is Secret Garden in Cabarete?
- No. Cabarete is on the north coast in Puerto Plata province; Secret Garden is in Los Corales, Bávaro, on the east coast in La Altagracia province. The two towns are separate markets at opposite ends of the island, so this site can compare them but cannot sell you a home in Cabarete.
- Is the water at Los Corales calm enough for an easy swim?
- Usually, yes. A coral reef well offshore breaks up the larger waves along the Bávaro coast, leaving calmer shallows with a gentle sandy entry, and local beach guides describe the area as suited to swimming and snorkelling. Sea conditions still change with the weather, so follow the flags on the day. The beach is about a 5-minute walk from Secret Garden.
- Which airport would I use for each town?
- For Cabarete, Gregorio Luperón International at Puerto Plata (POP), about 11 miles from town. For Los Corales, Punta Cana International (PUJ), a 15-minute drive from Secret Garden. Banco Central data compiled on Wikipedia show 10,689,693 passengers through PUJ in 2025 against 814,076 through POP, which is why the Punta Cana side usually has more direct routes to choose from.
- Do I need a car in either town?
- Not for the daily routine. Both are places you get around on foot: Cabarete along its bay, Los Corales through lanes that lead down to the sand, about 1,476 ft from the Secret Garden gate. A car or taxi comes into play for the airport run, the larger supermarkets and day trips; from Secret Garden, Downtown Punta Cana and the San Juan Shopping Center are about 15 minutes by road.
