Macao Beach, DR: the north end of the coast, seen from Los Corales
Type Macao Beach DR into a search bar and the two letters do real work: they keep out Macau, the city on the south coast of China, and point you to Playa Macao on the east coast of the Dominican Republic. It lies at the north end of the Punta Cana resort coast, in the same municipal district as Los Corales, where Secret Garden is being built. This guide is written from that address: where Macao sits in relation to Bávaro, why the coast around it is built so lightly, what the state built there for visitors, and how someone living in Los Corales would actually spend a day there.
Where Macao sits, measured from Secret Garden
Playa Macao lies north of the Bávaro and Arena Gorda resort strip, with the small village of El Macao directly behind the sand. On the administrative map it is a neighbour rather than a separate destination: Bávaro, Los Corales included, and Macao both belong to the El Salado section of the Verón-Punta Cana tourist municipal district, together with Cortecito, Cabeza de Toro, Arena Gorda and Uvero Alto.
Drawn as a straight line between Secret Garden's published coordinates and the beach's, Macao is roughly 9.5 miles up the coast. That is a map measurement, not a journey. Nobody publishes a routed distance or a drive time from Los Corales to Macao, so this page does not invent one. The closest thing to a timetable is the airport-transfer table of one long-running Punta Cana travel resource, which gives Bávaro Beach as 20–25 minutes from the airport and Macao Beach as 22 miles and 35 minutes. Those are figures for areas, not for any particular address.
Why the north end is built so lightly: a 2005 rulebook
Head north from Bávaro and the resort strip thins out: fewer blocks of hotel rooms, and at Macao a village where a resort might be. Part of the explanation is on paper. In 2005 the tourism ministry issued Resolution 154/2005, a rulebook for the whole tourist coast from Uvero Alto down to the Punta Cana airport. It asks that building happen without compromising the landscape the area is known for, requires an environmental impact study and a management plan from every project, and splits the shore between the Boulevard Turístico and the ocean into stretches, each with its own density ceiling.
Converted from rooms per hectare, the ceiling from Uvero Alto to Punta Macao is about 10 rooms per acre. On the stretch from Punta El Cortecito to Punta de Los Nidos it is about 28. The resolution therefore wrote a lighter coast into the rules at Macao's end, and a denser one further south.
Two limits on reading that. The ministry still publishes the 2005 text, but whether any zone has since been amended was not checked, so treat it as the ministry's rulebook for this coast rather than the binding rule for a given parcel today. And the stretches are drawn between named headlands, not on a map we have read, so this page does not say which one Los Corales or Secret Garden falls in. A parcel question belongs with an attorney or the district council.

What the state built at Macao, and what public means there
Every beach in the Dominican Republic is public at the water's edge. Ley 305 of 1968 keeps roughly the first 200 feet inland from the high-tide line in public hands, so nobody can own the sand. What differs from beach to beach is the land behind it. Along much of Bávaro that land belongs to hotels, which may lawfully run the walkways, the parking and the loungers while the sand itself stays public.
At Macao the land behind the beach is a village and a public car park. Only one resort stands on the bay, and the state has invested in the visitor rather than in a concession: the tourism ministry, through its tourist-zone infrastructure committee CEIZTUR, rebuilt the access road and built a car park with 86 car spaces and 14 coach bays, public bathrooms, benches and lighting. Those works were inaugurated in 2022, and the numbers are the ones published at inauguration, not a recent count. The ministry puts Macao's footfall above 200,000 visitors a year, a figure from its own 2021 statement.
Two beaches, one district: Bávaro at your door, Macao up the coast
For someone living in Los Corales, Macao is not a replacement for the everyday beach. It is the other beach. The table sets the two side by side using only what is sourced; where no figure exists for a row, it says so rather than filling the gap.
The water is the real difference. Macao gets a steadier supply of wind and wave than the sheltered stretches south of it, which is why surf schools work its sand. Its bay faces north, and a small headland on its eastern side shelters it from the easterly current that carries sargassum onto this coast. One Punta Cana travel resource estimates that seaweed reaches Macao roughly 10–20% of the time, and far more often on the east-facing beaches. That is one observer's estimate of a tendency, not a promise about any given week.
| Bávaro Beach at Los Corales | Playa Macao | |
|---|---|---|
| From Secret Garden | About 1,476 feet, a 5-minute walk | Roughly 9.5 miles in a straight line; no published drive time |
| From the airport, per one travel resource's table | 20–25 minutes | 35 minutes |
| Behind the sand | The Los Corales neighbourhood | The village of El Macao and a public car park |
| The water | One of the sheltered stretches south of Macao | More wind and wave, with surf schools on the sand |
| Sargassum | No percentage published for this stretch | Roughly 10–20% of the time, by one observer's estimate |
Planning a Macao day from Los Corales
Macao has a daily rhythm worth knowing. Buggy and ATV excursions from the resort strip use it as their beach stop, so the middle of the day is its loudest stretch, and Sunday is when Dominican families fill the sand. A weekday arrival well before the excursions, or a late afternoon, is the ordinary way round both; it is a habit reported by visitors, not a timetable.
If you want to surf, several schools teach on the beach. One of them publishes two-hour group lessons from $100 per person, boards and rash guards included; that is one operator's starting rate and it changes, so check before you go. For lunch, a row of open-air eateries near the eastern entrance serves grilled or fried fish with rice, beans, salad or plantains, at around $10 a plate. Several take cash only, so bring some.
On the water, the Verón-Punta Cana municipality posts lifeguards at Macao with the local fire service, and the beach serves as an operations base for its holiday beach watch. Local reporting has also recorded that the sea there has taken lives. The advice that follows from both facts is simple: swim near a staffed post, and read the water on the day you go.
What Macao adds to an address in Los Corales
Secret Garden is a gated community of 327 residences on a ~12.4-acre site in Los Corales. Its everyday beach is Bávaro Beach, about 1,476 feet away, a 5-minute walk, and Punta Cana International Airport is a 15-minute drive at 12.2 miles. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2027, with residences from $233,000.
Macao is what the same district offers a little further along: rougher water for a surf lesson, a village lunch on the sand, a beach whose shape was set by public works and a lightly built stretch of coast. Even the power runs along that line. The private utility whose concession covers Bávaro, CEPM, was created in 1992 and carries both ends of this coast in its name: the Consorcio Energético Punta Cana-Macao.
Common questions
- Is Macao Beach DR the same place as Macau?
- No. Macau is a city on the south coast of China. Macao Beach, or Playa Macao, is a public beach on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, at the north end of the Punta Cana resort coast and in the same municipal district as Bávaro.
- How far is Macao Beach from Secret Garden?
- Roughly 9.5 miles in a straight line between the two sets of published coordinates. No routed distance or drive time is published for that trip. One travel resource's airport-transfer table puts Macao Beach 35 minutes from the airport, against 20–25 minutes for Bávaro Beach.
- Is there parking at Macao Beach?
- Yes. Public works inaugurated in 2022 rebuilt the access road and added a public car park built with 86 car spaces and 14 coach bays, along with public bathrooms. Those are the figures published when the works opened.
- Can you surf at Macao Beach?
- Yes. Macao gets steadier wind and wave than the sheltered beaches to its south, and several surf schools teach there. One publishes two-hour group lessons from $100 per person; rates change, so confirm before booking.
- Are there lifeguards at Macao Beach?
- Yes. The Verón-Punta Cana municipality posts lifeguards there with the local fire service. The sea at Macao has also taken lives, so swim near a staffed post and read the water on the day.
