Uvero Alto vs Los Corales: two ends of one district, seen from Bávaro

Published October 2, 2026 9 min read

Uvero Alto is the far northern end of the Punta Cana resort coast, beyond Arena Gorda and Macao, where the hotel frontage thins out into long, little-visited beaches. Secret Garden is not there. It is being built in Los Corales, in Bávaro, roughly 13.7 miles to the south in a straight line. This guide is written for a buyer weighing those two ends of the same district: what separates them on the road, what is changing on that road, how the planning rules shaped each stretch, and what the choice means for an owner who uses a home a few weeks a year and lets it for the rest.

Same district, opposite ends of the coast

On paper the two places are neighbours. Bávaro, Los Corales included, and Uvero Alto both belong to the El Salado section of the Verón-Punta Cana tourist municipal district, which is part of the municipality of Higüey. The same district council runs the land-use consultation that a building project must pass at either end.

On the ground they sit at opposite ends of the resort coast. The clearest way to see the gap is an airport-transfer table published by one long-running Punta Cana travel resource. It lists Bávaro Beach at 10–14 miles and 20–25 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport, and Uvero Alto at 24–28 miles and 40–50 minutes, the last line of its list. Those are ranges for whole areas, and Uvero Alto is a long one: the first hotel you reach comes well before the last. Secret Garden's own figure is a separate measurement from a separate source, a 15-minute drive at 12.2 miles, and the two should not be mixed.

Measured between Secret Garden's published coordinates and the point Wikipedia gives for the locality, Uvero Alto lies roughly 13.7 miles up the coast. That is a line on a map, not a route. Nobody publishes a drive time for it, so this page does not offer one.

The road north is being widened

Every trip between the two ends uses the same coastal tourist boulevard, and its northern stretch is the part now being rebuilt. In October 2025 the state's toll-road trust, RD Vial, announced a plan for the boulevard that includes widening the section between Macao and Uvero Alto, about 8 miles, from two lanes to four, paid for out of national toll revenue. At the end of June 2026 the public works ministry was reported to be pressing ahead with that widening.

Two things have not been published: a completion date, and any estimate of how much time the work will save. Until they exist, treat the project as a signal of where traffic is expected to go rather than as a shorter journey. A buyer can read it a second way too. A road being doubled in width toward Uvero Alto is a reason to ask what else is planned along it, not to assume the northern end will stay as empty as it looks today.

The boulevard is not the only way in. In January 2015 the national government opened the Bávaro–Uvero Alto–Miches highway, about 45 miles long and part of the eastern road corridor, which was said at its opening to benefit 11 communities along its route. It links Uvero Alto northward to Miches as well as south to Bávaro.

Why the northern end looks so open

Uvero Alto's emptiness is partly written into the rules. The tourism ministry's Resolution 154/2005, which covers the coast from Uvero Alto down to the Punta Cana airport, gave the Uvero Alto–Punta Macao stretch between the boulevard and the ocean its lowest density ceiling: about 10 rooms per acre once converted from rooms per hectare. Along the whole coast it keeps buildings to between 2 and 4 levels above natural ground, depending on location. Whether that 2005 text has since been amended for a particular parcel was not checked, so any parcel question belongs with an attorney or the district council.

What a visitor finds there matches the rulebook. The same travel resource describes golden sand, water less turquoise than further south and at times rougher, and beaches visited by far fewer people. It lists no beach club there, notes that there is very little to eat on the sand, and says public transport reaches the area only with difficulty, so most people arrive by taxi or rental car.

Los Corales is the other side of that trade. From Secret Garden, Bávaro Beach is about 1,476 feet away, a 5-minute walk, and Downtown Punta Cana and the San Juan Shopping Center are about 15 minutes by car. Errands, a restaurant meal and a swim fit into an ordinary morning instead of needing a plan.

Power and water: what changes with the address, and what does not

One thing stays the same. Electricity at both ends comes from the same private utility, CEPM, whose own description of its concession names Bávaro and Uvero Alto alike. Someone comparing the two areas is not comparing power suppliers.

Public water is where the map differs. INAPA, the national water authority, says drinking water across Verón-Punta Cana lacks a structured public system and depends on wells, water trucks and cisterns. Its water, sewer and reuse programme for the district, valued at US$400 million and out to tender with proposals due on 12 October 2026, names Arena Gorda, Cortecito, Bávaro, Cabeza de Toro and Punta Cana as the areas it is meant to serve. Uvero Alto is not on that list.

Read that carefully. It describes what one programme covers, not how any building at either end is supplied today, and a tender is not a finished network. It is, however, a fair question to put in writing to whoever is selling you a home, wherever on this coast it stands.

Owner use or rental: which distance are you paying for?

For an owner who visits a few times a year, the drive north is part of the holiday, and an empty beach at the end of it may be worth every minute. For a home that is let to guests for most of the year, the sums change. Every guest makes the airport run twice, and they compare listings knowing it: a 40–50 minute transfer and a 15-minute one look very different side by side on the same booking page.

The same holds once guests have arrived. With little to eat on the sand and few ways to get about without a car, an evening out at the northern end usually starts with a drive. In Los Corales the beach is a walk and the shops are close. Neither is a flaw. They are two different products, and the right one depends on who will sleep in the home on most nights of the year: you, or someone who booked it.

Drive the coast before deciding. Start in Los Corales, follow the boulevard north through Arena Gorda and Macao to Uvero Alto, and the change in density, and in the road itself, will tell you more than any table.

Where Secret Garden sits in this choice

Secret Garden is a gated community of 327 residences on a ~12.4-acre site in Los Corales, built around a 19,375 sq ft lagoon-style resort pool. Bávaro Beach is about 1,476 feet away and Punta Cana International Airport is a 15-minute drive at 12.2 miles. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2027, with residences from $233,000.

It stands at the convenient end of the district rather than the quiet one, and this page does not pretend otherwise. If Uvero Alto's open sand is what draws you, it is roughly 13.7 miles up the same coast, near enough for a day trip. If a walk to the beach and a short airport run matter more, that is the case for Los Corales.

Common questions

Is Secret Garden in Uvero Alto?
No. Secret Garden is in Los Corales, in Bávaro, roughly 13.7 miles south of Uvero Alto measured as a straight line between published coordinates. Both areas belong to the El Salado section of the Verón-Punta Cana tourist municipal district, at opposite ends of the resort coast.
How does the airport transfer to Uvero Alto compare with Bávaro?
One Punta Cana travel resource's transfer table gives Uvero Alto as 24–28 miles and 40–50 minutes from the airport, against 10–14 miles and 20–25 minutes for Bávaro Beach. These are ranges for whole areas. Secret Garden's own published drive to the airport is 15 minutes at 12.2 miles.
Is the road to Uvero Alto being improved?
Yes. A plan announced in October 2025 widens the Macao–Uvero Alto section of the coastal tourist boulevard, about 8 miles, from two lanes to four, funded from toll revenue, and works were reported under way in June 2026. No completion date has been published.
Why is Uvero Alto less built up than Bávaro?
Partly by design. The tourism ministry's Resolution 154/2005 set the lowest density ceiling on this coast, about 10 rooms per acre, on the stretch from Uvero Alto to Punta Macao, and caps buildings at between 2 and 4 levels depending on location.
Do Uvero Alto and Bávaro share an electricity supplier?
Yes. The private utility CEPM lists both Bávaro and Uvero Alto in its own description of its concession area. Public water is different: the national water authority's planned programme for the district names Bávaro among the areas it will serve, and does not name Uvero Alto.
